On 1st July 2017, Goods and Services Tax (GST) was executed in India. GST supplanted a few distinctive indirect taxes in India like Service Tax, VAT, Central Excise, and so on In this article, we examine the GST rates and HSN codes pertinent on laptops in India.

Tax on laptops before GST

In the pre-GST time, VAT was required on the sale of laptops at the pace of 14-15%, depending on the state where the sale was made.

Current rate of GST on laptops

GST is currently exacted at a pace of 18% on laptops, thus taking the complete price somewhat higher than what consumers would have paid in the pre-GST period.

HSN code for laptops & computer devices

Laptops and desktops go under Chapter 84 of HSN. These are noted under the chapter head 8471 'Automatic data processing machines and units thereof; magnetic or optical readers, machines for transcribing data onto data media in coded structure and machines for processing such data, not somewhere else determined or included'. The chapter incorporates personal computers, laptops and micro-computers.

Here are the HSN codes on computer devices and accessories under chapter 84:

• 8471 - HSN code for laptops, desktops and other personal computers.

• 8471 - HSN code for printers, keyboards and USB storage devices.

• 8528 - HSN code for computer monitors not surpassing 32 inches.

• 8528 - HSN code for monitors (other than computer monitors not surpassing 32 inches).

• 8443 - HSN code for printers.

• 8471 - HSN code for computer keyboards, mouse & other input devices, USB drives, hard disks & other storage devices.
